This workshop is an opportunity for educators, learners, and anyone interested in India’s civilizational wisdom to explore its depth and relevance to modern education.
The Indian Knowledge Systems are not merely about ancient facts or rituals; they encompass a holistic view of education, well-being, sustainability, and human flourishing. This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the foundational principles of IKS and to inspire them to bring these insights into their own teaching and learning contexts.
Understanding History of Indic Education
The workshop begins with a session on the History of Indic Education, offering a fascinating journey through India’s educational heritage — from the Vedic gurukulas and Buddhist vihāras to medieval centers of learning like Nalanda and Takshashila. Participants will understand how education in India was deeply integrated with life, community, and dharma, fostering both intellectual and spiritual growth. This session will also highlight how colonial interventions disrupted these systems, making it crucial to reclaim and reinterpret them for today’s world.
Educational Philosophy and Pedagogy
Next, the workshop delves into the Educational Philosophy and Pedagogy of IKS. This session explores the underlying vision of education as more than academic achievement — as a process of self-realization, character-building, and harmonious living. It will discuss pedagogical methods such as guru–śiṣya samvāda (dialogue-based learning), experiential knowledge, and value-centric education, contrasting them with contemporary approaches and showing how they can complement modern classroom needs.
Panchakosha Pathway
A special segment is dedicated to the Panchakosha Pathway, which presents education and personal development through the five layers of human existence described in the Upanishads: annamaya (physical), prāṇamaya (vital), manomaya (mental-emotional), vijñānamaya (intellectual/discriminative), and ānandamaya (blissful). Participants will learn how these layers can inform a truly holistic approach to education, one that nurtures not just the intellect but the body, emotions, and spirit.
Short Modules on IKS Content
The workshop also offers Short Modules on IKS Content, giving a glimpse into various areas like Ayurveda, Yoga, Bharatiya Ganita (Indian mathematics), astronomy, ethics, and cultural ecology. These modules are designed as actionable ideas and lesson templates that teachers can take back and implement in classrooms or workshops.
Way Forward
Finally, the workshop concludes with a discussion on the Way Forward — how individuals and institutions can meaningfully integrate IKS into curricula and personal practice. It will also provide guidance on resources, training opportunities, and ways to deepen one’s engagement with these knowledge systems.
This one-day workshop promises to be interactive, reflective, and practical — equipping participants with insights and tools to make learning richer, more connected, and deeply rooted in India’s timeless wisdom.
Register now and join us on this journey of rediscovering the soul of Indian education!
