Center for Indigenous Knowledge Systems

We work on developing principles of education that emerge from Indigenous education like holistic learner development, ecology and sustainability oriented education, embodied knowledge and collective knowing, by bringing together theory and practice from indigenous knowledge systems worldwide.

What is
Indigenous Knowledge?

Indigenous Knowledge is a body of observations, oral and written knowledge, innovations, practices, and beliefs that promote sustainability and the responsible stewardship of cultural and natural resources through relationships between humans and their landscapes. Indigenous Knowledge cannot be separated from the people inextricably connected to that knowledge. It applies to phenomena across biological, physical, social, cultural, and spiritual systems.
